Writing Skills: Character Descriptions
Literature classes often require students to verbally discuss or express in writing character analyses. This product provides students with a short novel excerpt, a scaffold from which to write a character description, and a sample multi-paragraph description. The teaching strategy I’ve used is to first go over the excerpt with students, pausing in different spots to discuss what adjectives the students can apply to a character given the context. Students write those adjectives in the margins. Later, when they use the scaffold to choose three adjectives to apply to their chosen character, they can refer back to those portions of the excerpt for their written discussion.
