Writing Skills: Simplification and Elaboration
One of my favorite worksheets! Your students will actually enjoy working on their language skills with this activity! Middle school and high school students learn that extra words do not always equal extra meaning, all while improving the descriptiveness and specificity of their writing. After extracting the simplified versions of comically complicated sentences (and learning new lexicon in the process), students then add meaning by adding adjectives, adverbs, and other details after a roll of dice.
